A JUDY MOMENT
Danny Boy. Two takes and session breakdown material.

BILLION DOLLAR QUARTET
Four music icons who have all reached Living Legend status, and are all admittedly unabashed Judy Garland fans, sing four of her greatest Hollywood hits.

BING AND ROSIE #387
Originally broadcast on August 23, 1961, this episode of Rosemary Clooney and Bing Crosby's daily radio show for CBS also features Ken Carpenter. The songs include Cheek To Cheek, Bye Bye Blackbird, Don't Blame Me, On The Street Where You Live, and Singing In The Rain.

COMING ATTRACTIONS
Judy promotes some of the films that will be shown at NYC's Walter Reade Theater this week.

DUET OF THE WEEK
Judy Garland and Gene Kelly sing You Wonderful You from Summer Stock (which will be on the big screen at the Walter Reade Theater this coming Saturday).

DUET OF THE WEEK 2
Gene Kelly and Liza Minnelli sing For Me And My Gal (also being screened at the Walter Reade this week)

ENCORE
Millie Jackson is tore up from the floor up.

JUDY GARLAND IN CONCERT
From Judy's last hurrah at the Palace, that miraculous engagement from the summer of love (1967). Here is a truncated recording of the night Joan Crawford called attention to herself while sitting in the audience, which led to her finding her way to the stage. Sorry for not posting the multiple night highlight folder as promised. Look for that again later in August.

REQUESTS
Two radio performances, including an original song written by Judy Garland!

SUMMER OF SONG #10
Somebody might want to try and wake Joe McCarthy because Judy Garland and her friends are naming names. Featuring Anita, O'Day Little Willie John, Hoagy Carmichael, and others.

SUNDAY MORNING SPECIAL
Hank Williams' Health and Happiness Show. Joining Hank for this complete program are Miss Audrey and The Drifting Cowboys. Songs include, Happy Rovin' Cowboy, Lost Highway, I Wanna Live And Love Always, Boil Them Cabbage Down, I'll Have A New Body, Fingers On Fire, and Sally Goodin. From November, 1952. You can't help but notice the irony in the name of the program when you take into consideration that Hank died mere weeks after this show was broadcast.

WHERE JUDY PLAYED
Liza Minnelli stirs up some some dust and memories. Recorded live at the Palace, December, 2009.

ON THIS DAY IN HERSTORY (July 31, 1967)

Per David Price, "July 31, 1967 ... Opening night at Judy's final series of appearances at New York's Palace Theatre ... she was welcomed by a sold-out house, and did she deliver! Pictured here with John Bubbles who appeared in the show. Lorna and Joe were also on the bill, primed and ready after touring the music fair circuit with Mama in the weeks leading up the the Palace engagement. They are seen here in the dressing room together."

PART 2 OF OUR SNEAK PEEK AT THE NEW JOHN FRICKE BOOK, JUDY A LEGENDARY FILM CAREER

Here is part 2 of our look at JUDY A LEGENDARY FILM CAREER, written by John Fricke and published by Running Press (Perseus Books Group).

The book goes on sale in September, but John Fricke will be signing advance pre-sale copies on Friday August 5th between showings of A Star Is Born and Easter Parade at the Walter Reade Theater on 65th street in New York City.

Mr. Fricke and the representative from Running Press will be in the lobby between 5:15 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. and then again from a little after 6:00 P.M. until no later than 8:30 P.M. (and possibly earlier).

Neither Mr Fricke nor the Walter Reade theater will be selling copies of the book, only the publishers rep will do that. After the representative leaves no more books will be sold so it is suggested that if you care to purchase a copy the earlier you arrive the better.

The Walter Reade Theater is participating in New York city's "Summer Of Judy" retrospective currently taking place at Film Society Lincoln Center and The Paley Center.
Click on "Older Posts" on the bottom half of this page to find complete schedules and listings.

Over the course of three decades Garland produced a legacy of dozens of memorable films, including such musical classics as The Wizard Of Oz, Meet Me In St Louis, Easter Parade, and A Star Is Born. She also triumphed in dramatic films such as Judgment At Nuremburg and I Could Go On Singing. Production histories, behind the scenes stories about Judy and her co-stars, and reviews are provided for all of Garland's feature films. JUDY also features sections on the star's appearances in short subjects, about the film roles that she began but was unable to complete: and a fascinating list of projects for which she was rumored. Exhaustively researched and illustrated by more than five hundred photos JUDY provides the definitive look at the superstar's life on the big screen."

One Of The Finest Books Ever Written About Television

Coyne Steven Sanders and Tom Gilbert's book "DESILU The Story Of Lucille Ball And Desi Arnaz" is being reissued in an updated and expanded form.

Along with "Rainbows End" this has to be among the finest books written about television.
But maybe I am doing it a disservice by saying it is merely a book about television because it is so much more for than that.

DESILU is a wonderfully fast paced story filled with an insiders knowledge of the television industry. It is jam packed with historical facts mixed in with refreshing insights and behind the scenes gossip.
It is also the story of visionaries and pioneers, of love and passion and betrayal, and genius destroyed by vices.

Desilu is also a story of survival.

If you are a fan of I Love Lucy, television history, or heartbreaking love stories, this book is a must read.

The book will go on sale August 2 and is now available for pre-order at amazon, com and barnesandnoble.com

NEW FILES POSTED TO THE YAHOO GROUP (for the week of July 24, 2011)

A JUDY MOMENT
As chosen by group member Martha (our Hoohah of the week). Judy doesn't just put this one in the pocket, she starts there!

BING AND ROSIE # 386
Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney are back with another episode of their CBS radio show. Rosie seems to be an especially good humor despite having had the indignity of singing about a beverage called SQUIRT. Other songs include Keep It Gay, The Cockeyed Mayor, Summertime, Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me, Don't Take Your Love From Me. Original air date: August 22, 1961.

DUET OF THE WEEK
Joni Mitchell and James Taylor create a little magic.

ENCORE
Take a bow, Amy Winehouse.

JUDY AT THE PALEY CENTER
With a nod to the soul stirring events that are currently taking place at The Paley Center in New York, here are some highlights from Judy's first four television specials.

JUDY GARLAND IN CONCERT
Live in Hartford, CT, October 20, 1967. Judy's second night from this run has been posted here before, but this is the internet debut for the opening night show. Lucky for us the recording being shared is taken directly from the master (which has surprisingly good sound for an audience recorded vintage bootleg of this type). As Judy's (rough) voice warms up she get's adventuresome and tries to croon and belt and growl, and the notes that she doesn't bend and reshape she holds forever.

SUMMER OF SONG #9
Judy Garland and friends trip the light fantastic. Featuring Sam Cooke, Wing, Fred Astaire, Nina Simone, Blossom Dearie, and others.

SUNDAY MORNING SPECIAL
Jerry Lee Lewis live in Holland, 1972.

WHERE JUDY PLAYED
Dakota Staton at the Newport Jazz Festival (the complete set)

On This Day In Herstory (July 24, 1943)

Per David Price, "July 24, 1943 ... found Judy still traveling with the Hollywood Bond Cavalcade ... seen here with fellow travellers Kay Kyser, Dick Powell, and James Cagney. The actual date of this photograph is unknown to me ... but I like the fun and camaraderie seen in this shot and wanted to share it here ..."

REVISED COVER FOR JUDY GARLAND THE LONDON STUDIO RECORDINGS 1957-1964

Here is the revised cover for the most exciting Judy Garland CD release this season.

And just to reiterate, there will be fourteen NEVER BEFORE RELEASED tracks included in the set.

Along with all of Judy's previously released Abbey Road studio recordings there will also be several complete alternate takes, as well as interrupted performances, false starts, breakdowns, and studio chit chat.

I am particularly looking forward to the complete alternates takes of Hello Bluebird and It Never Was You, not to mention the recently discovered Please Say "Ah."

Other complete alternate takes include recordings from the Judy In London and Maggie May sessions.

The two disc set will be released by First Hand Records in October 2011.

UNDISCOVERED JUDY GARLAND RECORDING DISCOVERED!

I hope you are sitting down because we are about to give you the scoop on the track listing for the new Judy Garland CD. This information is not official yet and does not appear on the First Hand Records website (http://www.firsthandrecords.com/coming%20soon.htm) but you can trust ole Buzz that this will be the official set list.

There will be 43 tracks in all, 14 of them being issued for the very first time anywhere. That's right, There will be fourteen previously unreleased Judy Garland recordings featured on JUDY GARLAND THE LONDON STUDIO RECORDINGS 1957-1964.

Six of the unreleased tracks are alternate takes from the 1960 Judy In London sessions, there are two alternate takes from the I Could Go On Singing sessions, and three from 1964's Maggie May sessions.

The other unreleased material is comprised of false starts, unfinished recordings, interrupted takes, and studio chit chat.

Sounds amazing, doesn't it? But wait, it get's better. Amongst these treasures is a little gem that could quite possibly be the crown jewel of this collection

Please Say "Ah" is an undocumented, and, until now, undiscovered song that was written especially for I Could Go On Singing. It was possibly meant as a duet for Judy's character to sing with Dirk Bogarde's. The track on the CD is a demo recording of the song featuring Judy with composer Saul Chaplin and Judy apparently loves the song and you are going to love Judy all the more.

Did I mention there are FOURTEEN PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED TRACKS????

The rest of the set features all the officially released songs that Judy recorded at the famous Abbey Road studio between 1957-1964.

The recordings have all been remastered in high definition at Abbey Road for this release.

All that's going on with Judy right now is so wonderful. This release, the upcoming John Fricke book, JUDY A LEGENDARY FILM CAREER, and the currently concurrent retrospectives at Lincoln Center's Walter Reade Theater and the Paley Center just show how vital and culturally important Judy Garland was and still is.
But then again, would we expect any less from the world's greatest entertainer?
