JUDY GARLAND IN BEVERLEY

Received this press release from Gary Horrocks, publisher of JUDY GARLAND A Celebration, and thought it would be of interest to many of you.

Judy Garland in Beverley

A weekend celebration of the Life and Work of one of the Greatest Entertainers of the 20th Century, held in a stunning town in East Yorkshire

Saturday 25th – Sunday 26th October 2014

The International Judy Garland Club is pleased to host this weekend celebration of Judy Garland’s life. Judy worked for 45 of her 47 years, bequeathing a legacy of films, records, radio broadcasts and TV shows. Her 15-year tenure with MGM generated the greatest Hollywood platinum-coated musicals. Her 1, 100 plus international stage appearances are the stuff of legend. Gene Kelly described her as ‘the most talented performer we’ve ever had.’ For Fred Astaire it was ‘one of the greatest thrills to work with her.’ Frank Sinatra predicted, ‘the rest of us will be forgotten. Never Judy.’ ‘The happy times,’ reminisced Mickey Rooney, ‘were with Judy.’

RARE FILM SHOWS: An exciting aspect of the weekend will be the UK premiere of 12 features focusing on key aspects of Judy’s career. Filmmaker and editor Frank Labrador has created these fascinating films in Judy’s honour and will be coming to Beverley to introduce his work. Most of the films have only been showcased to exclusive audiences in Los Angeles and New York. Frank’s company, Labrador Productions, is an international video production and editing business, originally founded in Chicago, USA, and now based in Frankfurt, Germany.
BOOK SIGNING: British author Joan Coulson has flown in from her home in California for the event to launch her new Judy biography ‘Always for Judy – Witness to the Joy and Genius of Judy Garland.’ Joan has been a member of the Judy Garland Club since it was founded in 1963 and met Judy on a number of occasions. It is a profoundly personal biography. Very few books about Judy capture the human being, the lady with a wicked sense of humour, the performer who offered no artificial Hollywood edifice, who gave her heart and soul in a personal connection with her fans. Joan will be on hand throughout the weekend to reminisce about Judy and to sign copies of her book.www.always4judy.com
Gary Horrocks and Marielle O’Neill will be there to meet, greet and host the event. Beverley-based Gary is head of the international Club and has edited its official journal since 1998 and has contributed to many Garland documentaries and radio shows including, most recently ‘The One Show’ on BBC 1 and ‘Dear Judy’ with Rufus Wainwright on BBC Radio 2. Leeds-based Marielle joined the team in 2013 as editor of the Club newsletter and was recently profiled in the Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Evening Post discussing her love of Judy.
Raffle tickets will be sold throughout the event with the chance to win some Judy prizes.
COST:
·       A ticket for day one of the event is £15
·       A ticket for day two of the event is £35

About the Club
The International Judy Garland Club has an amazing history. It was established in March 1963, with Judy's blessing and approval and with Judy as Honorary President. Judy received regular telegrams of support from the Club wherever she appeared and members were in abundance at her opening and closing nights, and many nights in between. Members contributed funds to buy her cards and presents for Christmas and birthdays. In return Judy actively embraced and appreciated her supporters. She arranged for members to attend recording sessions and invited them to first night parties and back stage get-togethers.

SHAME ON THE ONE SHOW!

Yet another recording of Judy Garland performing at London's Talk Of The Town in 1969  has surfaced and will make it's public debut via The Judy Garland Experience Yahoo group this weekend. Fie on the BBC!!! Despite what they recently said on their One Show, Judy Garland was coherent, together, and performing well during this engagement, and this recording (and the 8 or 9 other nights of the run that were recorded) proves it!

A CELEBRATION INDEED!

JUDY GARLAND A CELEBRATION #4
arrived like a welcome cup of hot cider on a crisp autumn evening.

At first glance the magazine is a visual delight, with a stylish design and layout, and then you find that it is filled with a bounty of rare photos of Judy at work, at play, and at home in 1960.

In fact, 1960 is the theme of this utterly charming issue.

Included are two major essays on this remarkable year in Judy Garland's life.

Publisher and editor Gary Horrocks guides us through one of Judy's most pivotal years with an insightful and scholarly look at this amazing period of transcendence and rebirth. While longtime Garland fan and associate, Lorna Smith, takes a decidedly up close and personal slant as she recounts spending time with Judy in 1960, as well as attending Garland recording sessions and performances.

Regular issues of JUDY GARLAND A CELEBRATION, as well as newsletters, are included with your membership in the international Judy Garland fan club.

THE COMPANY SHE KEPT

Judy Garland and Mark Herron with the infamous Kray Twins.

Reginald and Ronnie Kray were the kings of underworld crime in the UK during the 50's and 60's.

Here is their blurb from Wikipedia:

Reginald "Reggie" Kray (24 October 1933 – 1 October 2000) and his twin brother Ronald "Ronnie" Kray (24 October 1933 – 17 March 1995) were the foremost perpetrators of organised crime in London's East End during the 1950s and 1960s. Ronald, commonly referred to as Ron or Ronnie, most likely suffered from paranoid schizophrenia.[4] The Krays were involved in armed robberies, arson, protection rackets, violent assaults including torture and the murders of Jack "The Hat" McVitie and George Cornell. As West End nightclub owners, they mixed with prominent entertainers including Diana Dors, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and politicians. The Krays were highly feared within their social environment, and in the 1960s they became celebrities in their own right, being photographed by David Bailey and interviewed on television. They were arrested on 9 May 1968 and convicted in 1969 by the efforts of a squad of detectives led by Detective Superintendent Leonard "Nipper" Read, and were both sentenced to life imprisonment.
Ronnie remained in Broadmoor Hospital until his death on 17 March 1995, but Reggie was released from prison on compassionate grounds in August 2000, eight weeks before his death in October from cancer.

The Krays were not the first criminals Judy associated with (nevermind that she was managed by a few), as far back as when she was a little girl she was known to have no fear in approaching or partying with the world's "bad boys."

Here she recounts approaching John Dillinger for his autograph mere moments before he was shot and killed:

NEW FILES POSTED TO THE YAHOO GROUP (for the week of April 29, 2012)

Here is a rundown of the new audio files posted to the Yahoo version of The Judy Garland Experience.
To access the files click HERE.

A JUDY MOMENT
Bench Wench Eleanor requested this song as a Could, Woulda, Shoulda entry. We can do better than that. How about been there, done that, and here's the tee shirt? Judy invades Jo Stafford's territory and sings one of the most popular tunes from the 50's.

CHESTERFIELD SHOW
Judy Garland guest star's on Bing Crosby's Chesterfield Show, May 21, 1952.

DUET OF THE WEEK
Joel Grey and Liza Minnelli reunite for a medley from Cabaret.

ENCORE
Royalty salutes royalty.

JUDY GARLAND IN CONCERT
Yet another night of Judy onstage at The Talk Of The Town. This performance was recorded on January 28, 1969 and belies once again Tracie Bennett's assertions and disingenuous performance that suggest that Judy gave less than her best during most of the run. The many recordings made during the engagement prove that on most nights Judy was in good spirits, working hard, entertaining the audience, and singing well (something that Ms. Bennett is apparently unable to do). I'm starting to wonder if maybe Trace Bennett is trying to downplay the quality of Judy's performances at The Talk of The Town as a way to justify her own harsh, wobbly, and pitch challenged vocals. Maybe because she can't sing like Judy Garland Ms. Bennett is trying to rewrite history to make Judy Garland sing like Tracie Bennett.

JUDY PIPES IN
After Judy Garland sang her songs and had her interview with Johnny Carson on the December 17, 1968 episode of the Tonight Show she decided to remain on the panel and stick around for the rest of the show. Here is a rare recording of Judy joining in while Carson interviews Shari Lewis and you can even hear her flirting a bit with Superbowl winning Green Bay Packer Jerry Kramer.

LADY ESTHER BLODGETT THEATER
Presents KATHERINE HEPBURN in LITTLE WOMEN. Originally broadcast on December 23, 1945.

MY DIME
Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, and Bing Crosby in a March Of Dimes radio fundraising special/salute honoring President Franklin D. Roosevelt on his birthday. This program was originally broadcast on January 30, 1945.

REQUESTS AND RARITIES
Oddities and the unexpected.

SUNDAY MORNING SPECIAL
Nina Simone live at the Drury Lane, October 12, 1977.

WHERE JUDY PLAYED
From 1965, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin showed up when pal Joey Bishop was guest hosting the Tonight Show and brought along their own unique brand of havoc and used it to full advantage to terrorize their friend.
