JUDY 1960

NEW AUDIO FILES POSTED TO THE YAHOO GROUP (for the week of January 29, 2012)

Here is this week's new homepage (by Allen) for the Yahoo version of The Judy Garland Experience.
Here also is a recap of this week's new audio files posted to the group. You may notice that everything posted this week comes from vintage radio, from all the 15 minute radio commercials promoting Judy's movies, to Joan Crawford playing an aging carnival dancer, to Ella Fitzgerald performing a live set exclusively for German radio, to Judy Garland and Shirley Bassey happily sharing a BBC broadcast and debuting their new singles, to, well, why don't you read below and see what all else there is.
Hopefully there will be something for everyone.

Remember, to access these audio files you need to be a member of the Yahoo group. Joining is free and easy, just click on the header of this post.

RELICS the ferragamos

FROM THE COLLECTION OF CHARLES TRIPLETT

Charles Triplett, longtime member and friend of The Judy Garland Experience, has consented to periodically share special items from his collection in a journal here on The Experience. His extensive collection includes vintage materials of all kinds -- most notably costumes and accessories from Judy's M-G-M films, wardrobe from her CBS-TV series, and her personal couture.. Charles is a careful preservationist, and does not publicly exhibit these items out of concern for their care and longevity. In this series we will have an unprecedented view into many of the rare and wonderful things he has collected.

Journal Entry #1: The Ferragamos

As I have said to my good and great friend, Tom Larro, many times - oh, how I wish I could go back to November of 1978 to attend the infamous JUDY GARLAND MEMORABILIA AND ART AUCTION. It made headlines even in my local small town North Carolina paper but at 18 with no money it was way out of my range. I did get the auction catalog which sold at the time for $25.

I was very intrigued with the wardrobe and shoes. There were a dozen couture items, several from THE JUDY GARLAND SHOW, and personal couture as well. There were nearly two dozen pair of Salvatore Ferragamo shoes. Even at that early age I knew that these shoes were made by the famous Italian shoe maker who had done custom made shoes for Jackie Kennedy, the Duchess of Windsor and Marilyn Monroe. These shoes were all custom made for each client and Judy had two dozen in a rainbow of colors. They were all listed as size 6 and half but were more like a US five and custom made to Miss Garland's very slim foot. All were pumps with a four inch spike heel.

Several years later in the mid 1980s I saw an ad in HOLLYWOOD STUDIO MAGAZINE advertising a pair of black pumps from the auction. I immediately wrote to the lady, Alice Garza, only to receive a note back saying they were sold.

Nearly 25 years later a pair of beautiful black silk-covered Ferragamos with ornament came up on the auction block. They were from the 1978 auction and had the original auction receipt, item # 113G. The bidding was furious, but I was able to win them. I had no idea until I received them that they were in fact the pair that were offered nearly 25 years before by the lady in HOLLYWOOD STUDIO MAGAZINE. Her name was on the receipt.

Judy's Ferragamos are one of the favorite items in my collection. I know of only three other pair in fans' hands and sometimes wonder where all those others are.

Until next time,
Charles

NEW FILES POSTED TO THE YAHOO GROUP (for the week of January 22, 2012)

A JUDY MOMENT
April 6, 1968. With just a piano accompanying her, and in front of a small audience at The Plaza, Judy effectively gets her message across.

BING AND ROSIE #413
This episode of the Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney show was originally broadcast on September 28, 1961.

COULDA SHOULDA WOULDA
Etta James sings one of the all time great torch ballads. One that strangely eluded Judy Garland. Maybe she didn't like it, too bad cause she sure coulda sung the hell out of it.

DUET OF THE WEEK
Bobby Troup and June Christy reunite on Bobby's 1968 television special and sing a song that was one of Troup's first compositions and one of Christy's first hits.

ENCORE
A few more moments with the great Etta James.

HOSTESS WITH THE MOSTESS
We had a request to repost the audio files of Judy's stint as the substitute host of the Merv Griffin show (which led to this week's mini theme of 1968). Appearing with Judy are Margaret Hamilton, Arthur Treacher, Moms Mabley, Van Johnson, Rex Reed , and The Ohio Express. Taped on December 23, 1968 for broadcast in January, 1969.

JUDY GARLAND IN CONCERT
JFK Stadium, July 20, 1968. Judy's orchestra is augmented by members of the Count Basie group, and even the great Basie himself can't resist sitting in with Judy Garland. He joins the show for a medley with Judy midway through the concert.

JUDY'S GOT HER MOJO WORKING
At Judy's first appearance on the Merv Griffin show she showed up with a new song and created pandemonium. December, 1968.

MEDLEY STEW #3
Etta James sings a medley of her ballad classics.

SUNDAY MORNING SPECIAL

NEW FILES POSTED TO THE YAHOO GROUP (for the week of January 15, 2012)

Here is a recap of the audio files that were posted to the Yahoo version of The Judy Garland Experience™ earlier this morning. To access the files you must be a member of the Yahoo group. You can join by clicking on the header of this page or on any of the many homepage images at the bottom of this page.

Here is the rundown of this week's programming:

A JUDY MOMENT
This week's AJM is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King

ALTERNATE JUDY
Judy sings on an alternate take of The Joint Is Really Jumping Down At Carnegie Hall (1943). I don't know about y'all, but I think Judy sounds looser, more playful, and more adventurous here than in the take used in the movie (Thousands Cheer).

BiNG AND ROSIE #412
Another episode of Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney's daily radio show for CBS. Singer Frankie Laine pops up on the network feed to plug 4-way.This episode was originally broadcast on September 27, 1961.

COULDA SHOULDA WOULDA
One can only imagine the emotional intensity Judy Garland would have brought to this song. If given the chance it could have been her late 60's My Way or Is That All There Is. The folder contains a pretty dreadful version by Moms Mabley.

DUET OF THE WEEK
Marilyn Monroe and Frankie Vaughn (unreleased single/take). Oh those show folk!

ENCORE
This time Judy feels like swinging!

JUDY AND FRIENDS
Celebrate V.E. Day, May 8, 1945. Featuring Judy Garland, Loretta Young, Fulton Sheen, Dinah Shore, Johnny Mercer, Bing Crosby, and others. Original Armed Forces Radio broadcast.

JUDY GARLAND IN CONCERT
At The Merriweather Post Pavillion, September 9, 1967. Also Featuring Lorna Luft and Joseph Luft.

LADY ESTHER BLODGETT THEATER
BARBARA STANWYCK and Stephen McNally star in the 1950's radio adaptation of THE LADY GAMBLES.
